Synopsis
The movie is set in present day Pune. Akash(Ayushmann Khurana) is a struggling pianist. He pretends to be blind. It is later revealed as to why he pretends to be blind when he is actually isn’t. He happens to “accidently” meet Sophie(Radhika Apte). Sophie happens to be the daughter of a restaurateur who owns Franco’s. Coincidentally Franco’s is looking for a Pianist. Akash is hired to play at Franco’s daily. It is here that he meet yesteryear superstar Pramod Sinha(Anil Dhawan). Akash manages to woo Sophie & they get intimate on a rainy night.
Meanwhile Pramod is planning a surprise for his much younger wife Simi(Tabu). Pramod invites Akash to his house the next day for a private concert. Unbeknownst to Akash it is Pramod & Simi’s wedding anniversary.
Pramod informs his wife that he is going to Bangalore for some work & will be back by evening. Akash lands up at Pramod’s house at 1PM as instructed. Simi opens the door & informs Akash ain’t home. Akash informs her that Pramod had planned a surprise for her & has even paid an advance. Simi invites him inside. Akash begins to play the piano. To his horror he sees Pramod’s body lying a few feet away from him. Simi hopes that since Akash is blind he won’t be able to see what is happening around him & can be her alibi. Akash goes to the loo, where he finds a man – Simi’s BF hiding there! Simi’s BF helps her in cleaning up the mess, while Akash keeps playing the piano. Little do they know that Akash has been able to see everything!
What does Akash do next? Does he report the murder to the cops? Will Sophie forgive him for lying about his blindness? Will anyone believe him? You will have to watch the movie to find out!
Strengths
It is not everyday that you come across such a taut thriller. The movie’s five writers have done an excellent job of giving us a script with several twists & turns. Fortunately it is not a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. The writing is very witty & will have you in splits. The script is the real hero of the film. Director Sriram Raghavan has a good track record of directing thrillers. This movie is a case of practice makes perfect. Sririam raghavan has definitely mastered the art of directing thrillers. He manages to extract fine performances from his cast. Radhika is good in the limited but crucial part that she plays in the movie. Anil Dhawan is well cast as the yesteryear superstar who is still young at heart. The dialogue delivery by Chaya Kadam who plays Maushi is excellent. Zakir Hussain makes his presence felt. But the movie is driven by the fine performances of Ayushmann Khurana & Tabu. Tabu plays the role of a scheming, cunning & shrewd gold digger like no one else can. The movie probably wouldn’t have the impact had the role been essayed by anyone else. She is complemented well by Ayushmann, who is managing to grow his fan base by his smart movie choices.
Weakness
While the first half is excellent, we did feel that the second half could have been tighter. While there are several songs in the movie, none of them stay with you after exiting the theatre.
Verdict
While we had planned to watch the movie on a weekday, the rave reviews made us impatient. We saw the movie on Saturday evening. Thankfully the hype wasn’t unwarranted. It is definitely a movie worth watching. It is an edge of the seat thriller, which will keep you guessing. While the one liners will make you laugh out loud. do not miss this one for the world!
