At times all we want is to escape reality for a little while, and what better technique to do it than to submerge yourself in a gorgeous, dark, intricate imaginary land. For our list of the best fantasy series on Netflix, we have severe rules: no sci-fi, no horror, and no superheroes.

1. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Directed by: Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews
Cast: Amazing puppeteers and voice actors

A prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 faction film The Dark Crystal, Netflix’s TV series Age of Resistance is one of the most remarkable feats of puppeteering and practical effects we’ve ever seen. It’s beyond doubt unlike anything else on this list and possibly unlike anything you’ve ever seen earlier.

7. Neo Yokio

Directed by: Ezra Koenig

Neo Yokio really defies organization. It’s kind of like if GQ was a TV show by mode of a modern D&D movement. There are magic and mechs and mega-good tunes. It has an anime approach, but it’s Western in implementation.

8. The Shannara Chronicles

Directed by: Alfred Gough, Miles Millar

MTV took a big fantasy sway on The Shannara Chronicles, an edition of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks.

A lot of fantasy is based on accessible myths, legends, and folklore, and although you may feel you know the tale of the famous King Arthur and Merlin, you’ve never seen it told fairly like this before.
