Shekhar Gupta’s Award Shows Expose’

Spread the love

Shekhar Gupta did an expose’ on the Bollywood celebs & award shows. Read our article for my views on the expose’ & what needs to change.

When I first heard about the nepotism allegations against Bollywood, it thought it was uncalled for. After all, nepotism is prevalent in every aspect of our lives. Why single out Bollywood. People then hurled accusations of a group of people stopping outsiders from getting work or snatching roles meant for outsiders – this too is a common occurrence across the corporate world. I myself have been privy to many such ‘steals’. I reminded people about the box office track records of the people in question & asked them to back off. They on the other hand attacked me & called me a paid journo.

I felt that the audiences were overlooking the box office track records of the celebs & instead were judging celebs on their acting/filmmaking talent. Filmmaking/acting is an art & everybody who views it perceives it in a certain way. But the box office figures are a true barometer of a film’s or a celeb’s talent.

None of the opinions managed to change my mind. I believed that people were emotional after losing a talented actor & were being irrational. I did agree that Karan Johar was a bully & that his show – Koffee With Karan was toxic. I did believe that he at some level deserved all the criticism.

But it was Shekhar Gupta expose’ on award shows & Bollywood celebs which managed to make me just as angry as anybody else(click here to read the article). While I always knew that these award shows are rigged, I never knew that our Bollywood celebs would stoop so low to win an award. I thought judges are bribed & the rigging is restricted to that. I wasn’t aware that celebs threaten the award shows with consequences if they are not given the award.

Even veterans like Amitabh Bachchan, the Roshans, the Akhtars are no different. Shekhar Gupta mentions how Shahrukh too indirectly exerted pressure, while Katrina cried that she never gets nominated! No wonder a Nawazuddin Siddique or a Manoj Bajpayee or Pankaj Tripathi never wins the best actor trophy & probably will never win it till we – the audiences don’t stop watching & supporting these award shows.

We should ensure that our National Awards are at least clean & promote budding talent, especially outsiders.

Boycotted Award Shows 6 years ago. I don’t know why do people watch as the winners are announced before their telecast

Shekhar Gupta is late to this party and award show are known to be sham for sometime now and no one cares. Wish he had given a similar expose on National award and how political leanings decide national awards and honors like Padam Shrees.

Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor awarded Padam Shree is more scandalous than these 2 rs award shows which are just entertainment shows.

Shekhar Gupta needs to develop balls to write about the powerful not these soft targets like katrina
    and hrithik

the problem is that true actors like nawazuddin siddiqui, manoj bajpayee, rajkumarr rao etc never get the best actor trophy anywhere. what is the motivation for them to keep taking up challenging roles?

saif ali khan got the national award for hum tum! what a disgrace.

padma shree is a different topic altogether. I am not saying karan johar or ekta kapoor should not get any award. one should not forget their contribution to indian cinema. they both have produced several big hits.

The motivation is the love of the art and craft, the challenge and deep satisfaction of acting itself. And the love of the audience and the money that comes with increasing fame and status in your chosen field. As an artistic, creative person – the minute you start working FOR awards, you lose sight of what drives and fulfils you. If they happen, fine, but they are not the reason for pursuing creative work. Naseeruddin, Meryl Streep and many other top notch actors have said similar things. Competitive awards in creative fields are subjective in any case – you will never have clear winners like in competitive sports. Different actors doing different roles in different films, liked or disliked for different reasons – how does one ever come to an objective decision?
Even if the awards were perfectly fair, the jury incorruptible, and each actor in the category performed the same role, it would still be difficult to judge who was “the best” – because every trained actor would interpret the same role differently, emphasise different aspects of a character, and so on. Take for example 2 great actresses doing the same role in the stage musical Sunset Boulevard. I saw Patti Lu Pone perform, and she blew me away with her ferocious anger and descent into madness. I saw Glenn Close perform, and she equally blew me away but played the character as a pitiable monster – there was much more sadness and horror in her interpretation. But both were brilliant! Anyway, that’s my two cents, and sorry about writing a mini-blog about the farce of awards! 🙂 Keep up the good work, admins.

Well said. completely agree with you. my point is that bollywood awards are a joke thanks to this level of rigging. that should not be overlooked.

Hrithik had turned up & done what he was contracted to do ,he must have been upset about daddy not getting anything . Stupid and childish . He must understand that u win some ,u lose some. Imagine winning an award for Krishh & Dhoom but not for Lakshya or Guzaarish ! Nearly all of SRK’s vast awards from Filmfare are a free gift from Khalid Mohammed . They should have given someone like Sridevi an award way before a lot of undeserving types. And why would anyone in their right minds give Katty any award ? She is there only because of her item numbers .
