The chakra system is another very old system that has roots in Indian spirituality; the word chakra literally translates into wheel or disk. These are the Seven Chakra; they are cords of spiritual energy found along the vertebral column; each Chakra controls certain aspects of the bodily functions, both physical and spiritual. It is firmly believed that positive energy flows through and good health and balance is possible if the chakras are understood and regulated.
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)
This is the colour red, the Root Chakra is situated at the base of the spine and is controlled by the sense of feeling and is linked to safety, stability and survival. It corresponds with red and earth. A healthy Root Chakra gives us a sense of stability and safety and; when off, one may experience fears, anxiety, and issues with their lower limbs.
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
The Sacral Chakra is in the lower Belly and is responsible for feelings and passions as well as creativity and sexual energies. It is orange in colour and is associated with the element called water. It improves creativity and intimacy when equal, otherwise when uneven issues such as emotional instability, sexual disorders, and lack of creativity occur.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
The Solar Plexus Chakra has its location in the upper belly, slightly beneath the sternum or the central chest where the stomach is found. It symbolizes authority, pride, individual strength and confidence and they have assigned the element of fire to it, and color yellow. When the Solar Plexus Chakra is aligned, the patient assumes independence, and assertiveness, good decision-making abilities; conversely, misalignment leads to low self-esteem or indicators of poor digestion.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The Heart Chakra is placed in the center of the chest and its aspects are love and compassion and emotional healing. Color – green, element – air. When this chakra is balanced, people have qualities such as compassion and love for others, but if it is blocked one struggles with feelings of isolation, or heart diseases.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
One of them is located at the throat and is associated with communication. It has the color blue and the element is either or space. When open it allows for communication free of deception; when blocked it can be hard to talk or physical manifestations such as a sore throat.
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
On the forehead, precisely at the crown of the head, the Third Eye Chakra provides energy for intuition, wisdom and knowing. Its color is indigo and its element is light. A well aligned Third Eye Chakra brings clear sights and visions, and an unhealthy Third Eye Chakra causes the person to be confused or not able to rely on inner vision.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
Opposite to the base Chakra, Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and has connection to spirituality and higher consciousness. It is violet or white in color, and symbolizes spiritual access. When Crown Chakra is in its balanced state, spiritual awakening and enlightenment on the other hand imbalance or blockage may cause spiritual lack of direction.
