V was born Kim Tae-hyung on December 30, 1995, in Daegu's Seo District, and grew up in Geochang County. He is an eldest sibling with a younger brother and sister. V became interested in becoming a professional singer during his elementary school days. With the encouragement of his father, he started learning to play the saxophone when he was early in middle school as a way to eventually study music. V finally became a trainee for Big Hit Entertainment by passing an audition in Daegu.
After graduating from Korean Arts High School in 2014, V enrolled at Global Cyber University and graduated in August 2020, majoring in Broadcasting and Entertainment. As of 2021, he has enrolled at Hanyang Cyber University, majoring in Master of Business Administration Advertising and Media.
Artistry
V has a baritone singing voice that has had quite a positive response from critics in general. He is really looked upon in the aspects of vocal range and a "husky" tone. He gained wider recognition for the vocals of his solo song "Stigma" and was praised for his falsettos that really showed off his vocal range and unique musicality. On "Singularity", the opening track for BTS's Love Yourself: Tear, V's tonality was noted as a prominent "tone setter" on the album by music critic Blanca Méndez. Similarly, Katie Goh of Vice called it "one of V's best vocal performances." Karen Ruffini of Elite Daily wrote in her article that "V. has no problem churning out super soothing, low tones that are a key element in the overall sound for BTS," with Tamar Herman of Billboard also mentioning that it is V's lower range which comes as a prominent piece of BTS' music. He is greatly influenced by jazz and classical music, thus making his musicality very evident. Some of the people who inspire him include Eric Benet and Ruben Studdard.
V is known for his "duality", or the ability to evoke various emotions on stage as a performer. British journalist Rhian Daly of NME particularly noted this in a review of V's performance of "Singularity" during the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour, calling his movements "precise and deliberate". Crystal Bell at MTV observed how often V's performances work with live cameras in concert venues and how he utilizes them to create subtle expressions during performances.
