Major Mukund Varadarajan was born on 12th April 1983 to a Tamil Iyengar Family that originally viewed as roots from Paruthipattu near Avadi, Chennai. Although His birthplace is Kozhikode in Kerala when his father got a job in a public-sector bank, the family relocated to Tambaram, Chennai, he is now from a close-knit family with two sisters Nithya and Swetha.

Education & Career Change

Mukund had finished his Bachelor's degree in commerce at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya and a diploma in journalism at Madras Christian College. He started his corporate career in a BPO role. However, the inspirations from his grandfather and uncles, who had been commissioned officers in the Indian Army, had influenced Mukund to serve the nation rather than the corporate world. And he subsequently joined the armed forces.

Military Career
Mukund went to the Officers' Training Academy in Chennai, where he graduated and was commissioned as a lieutenant into 22 Rajput Regiment, Commissioned in March, 2006. After spending some time at the Infantry School in Mhow, he was posted in a UN peace keeping mission in Lebanon, things were going well for him - promoted to captain in July 2011 and then major in October 2012. Later, he was posted to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles in Shopian, Jammu & Kashmir, where he became part of a counter-insurgency unit operating in high-risk zones.

Ultimate Sacrifice & Gallantry
On 25 April 2014, Major Mukund led a high-stakes counter-terrorism operation in Qazipathri, southern Kashmir, targeting a top militant and his associates. The mission was successful in defeating the threat, alongside Sepoy Vikram Singh, but both of the brave soldiers died during the incident. Major Mukund’s extraordinary courage, leadership, and devotion to duty earned him the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, posthumously.

Personal Life
In 2009, Mukund married Indhu Rebecca Varghese. The couple had a daughter in 2011. His family recalls him as a caring husband, a dedicated father, and a person who embodied warmth, as well as professionalism.

Legacy & the film "Amaran"
In 2024, Amaran, a Tamil biographical war film, was released, depicting Major Mukund's life. Mukund was played by actor Sivakarthikeyan, while his wife Indhu was played by Sai Pallav, who embodies his flesh and blood. The film showcased Mukund's evolution from a young man with aspirations to an audacious soldier who ultimately gave his life in the service of his country.
