Muthappa Rai: From Banker to Underworld Don
Early Life & Beginnings
Nettala Muthappa Rai Derla took his first steps into the world of work as a clerk in Vijaya Bank. With an origin from a Tulu-speaking Bunt family, Muthappa experienced rough seas in his earlier days when he shifted to Bengaluru in the 1980s to set up a bar. This ill-advised move soon wed him to the darker side of the city's world.
Rise in the Underworld
Muthappa's reputation arose with the murder of M. P. Jayaraj, the reigning don of Bangalore, in 1990. The occurrence, being so overt, swung the media spotlight onto him, thereby establishing his foothold in the city's underworld. Authorities issued multiple warrants against him for murder, extortion, and conspiracy. Yet, despite fierce legal pressure, he was later acquitted in most cases due to lack of evidence.
Exile & Legal Troubles
Fleeing to Dubai in the mid-1990s after surviving being shot multiple times, Rai's escape was short-lived. He was extradited back to Bengaluru in 2002 and detained under heavy scrutiny by agencies like the CBI, IB, and R&AW. His high-profile trial ended in acquittal, after which he underwent a dramatic transformation—from criminal to businessman and social welfare advocate.
Business Ventures & Philanthropy
After the trial, Rai took to a legitimate path, with founding Jaya Karnataka, an NGO engaged with interventions in education, health and social welfare. He also successfully ventured into real estate and construction, being director of a number of companies, foregoing local reputation as an able entrepreneur in his own right.
Personal Life & Legacy
Rai was first married to Rekha, who passed away in 2013. He later remarried Anuradha, and fathered two sons, Rocky and Ricky, who now oversee his business empire across global locations. In the later years of his life, Rai was elected president of the Karnataka Athletics Association, symbolizing a shift towards civic life.
The End Years & Death
Diagnosed in 2020 with brain cancer, Rai died at 68 years of age in Bengaluru. In a manner befitting the city, with hepatitis and redemption on both sides, the story of this man is a poignant narrative about the evolution from a criminal to an entrepreneur and societal transformation..
