Upadrasta Vidya Sagar (better known as Vidyasagar) was born to a family in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, on 2 March 1963. He was born into a Telugu family: his father, Upadrasta Ramachandra Rao, was a musician, and his mother is Suryakantham. His grandfather was themselves a vidwan (scholar/musician) of the Bobbili royal court.
