Teams Participating
The tournament will feature 20 national teams. Hosts India and Sri Lanka qualify automatically. Among the teams already confirmed are India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Netherlands and Italy (the latter making their first appearance). The remaining places will be filled through regional qualifiers.
Venues & Time Table Highlights
Matches will be held across a number of major stadiums in India and Sri Lanka. Key Indian venues include Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai) and Arun Jaitley Stadium (Delhi). Sri Lankan venues include R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo) and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy). Notably, due to hosting arrangements, any match involving Pakistan will be held in Sri Lanka—not India. Time table details, including match dates and venues, are expected to be released closer to the tournament.
Match List & Stages
In the group stage, each team in a group plays the other four teams once in a round-robin. The top two advance to the Super 8 stage. In the Super 8, each team plays three matches against other teams in their Super 8 group (so two groups of four). The top two from each Super 8 group move to the semi-finals, followed by the final. A full match list (fixture by fixture) has yet to be published in public detail, but media sources indicate the structure and key venues are already locked in.
Points Table & Tournament Progression
The points table for the group stage will follow the familiar format: teams earn points for wins (typically 2 for a win, 1 for a tie/no-result), and net run rate (NRR) will determine rankings when teams are level on points. After each stage (group, Super 8), the table resets for the next round with only the advancing teams. Additionally, teams making the semi-finals will be those topping their Super 8 groups. The final winner will be crowned champion of the 2026 edition.

Why This Edition Matters
This T20 World Cup is significant for a few reasons. First, being jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, it spans major cricketing nations with large fan-bases and high-end stadium infrastructure. Second, the expansion to 20 teams makes the tournament more inclusive, giving more emerging nations a chance on the big stage. Third, the scheduling in February–March makes it relatively early in the year compared with some past tournaments, allowing for favourable weather conditions in the sub-continent.
