Aruna Irani is one of the best and most loved actresses from the 90s. She has acted in more than 500 films in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Gujarati cinema. She played mostly supporting roles. She has earned two Filmfare awards for Best Supporting Actress. She has also been nominated several times. She was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the  57th Filmfare Awards in 2012 held in Mumbai.

But Aruna Irani's speculated wedding to comedian Mehmood nearly resulted in the actress's unemployment, but Dada Kondke's offer of a song for a movie helped her make a return. Aruna Irani discussed the incident and said, "I'm not sure where the rumor that Mehmood Saab had wed me came from. No producer was willing to collaborate with me."

In a recent interview, She described how the rumours seriously hurt her career. Added Aruna, "A song from Dada Kondke's Marathi movie Andhala Maarto Dola was then offered to me. I resumed work in that manner. When Rajkumar Kohli and I were both filming at Asha Studio for the song, we ran into one another. When he realized I was there, he questioned, "Arey Aruna tu kaam kar Rhii hai?" I confirmed that I am employed. "Mujhe Laga tune shaadi kar li toh ab kaam nahin karti," he said.``

Aruna and Mehmood became a popular couple in the 1970s. Nevertheless, Aruna had to struggle more to settle her career after the rumors.

Until she cleared the air she didn't get work. Again her career came on track once she cleared all the rumors correlated with her and Mehmood Ali's marriage. She stated things got changed after she cleared those rumors.

With Gunga Jumna, Aruna Irani made her acting debut in 1961. Safar, Andaz, Caravan, Tarzan the storm, Dil to Pagal Hai, Gopi Kishan, Kahani rubber band ki, Naagin, Oos Raat ke baad, and Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand are just a few of the popular movies and TV episodes in which she has acted. In movies like Patthar Ke Sanam, Pet Pyar Aur Paap, Bewaffa se waffa, Bombay To Goa, and Naya Zamana, she co-starred with Mehmood Ali. Despite the popularity of Caravan and Bombay to Goa, she failed to obtain employment as a result of the marriage rumors.
