1. Stree

Stree, the first film in the horror-comedy genre, reached the 100-crore club just 18 days after its release. The film, which was shot on a shoestring budget of just 20 crores, wowed audiences with its original tale (based on a true occurrence), excellent performances from the whole cast, and intellectual - almost introspective - comedy.

2. Badhai ho

The comedy-drama Badhaai Ho, which had a budget of 30 crores and a gross of 132.65 crores, was another box office surprise. Intelligent dialogues and outstanding performances by the brilliant cast, particularly Gajraj Rao, Surekha Sikri, and Neena Gupta, added to the unusual plot.

3. Raazi

The fascinating story of Raazi, which was made on a budget of 40 crores, piqued audiences' interest right once. However, it was the film's hard-hitting performances that helped it earn a total of 158.77 crores. It's also one of the rare films with a female protagonist to reach the $100 million mark.

4. Andhadun

The audience was on the edge of their seats the entire time they were watching this darkly comic thriller. The thriller, which was made on a shoestring budget of only 25 crores, had Tabu and Ayushmaan in radically distinct roles. It has already amassed a total of 72.37 crores in box office receipts and is still showing in theatres.

5. Tumhari sulu

This lovely slice-of-life film brought to light a segment of society that is rarely acknowledged: the Indian housewife. The film, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role, grossed Rs. 30 crores against a budget of Rs. 20 crores.

6. Secret superstar

Even though the film starred non-commercial performers and had a modest budget of 15 crores, Secret Superstar managed to gross 81.28 crores. In reality, the film's emotionally resonant plot resonated with audiences all over the world, resulting in a worldwide gross of 121.59 crores.

7. Mulk

When the film first came out, it was up against Fanney Khan and Karwaan at the box office. However, with word-of-mouth exposure, this judicial drama - set against the backdrop of religious strife - gradually recovered its earnings, grossing a total of 27.05 crores (gross). Given that the film received little promotion and faced stiff competition at the box office, the final collection of Rs. 18 crores is unquestionably a success.

8. Hindi medium

In a sea of commercial potboilers with the same old premise, the story of this Irfan Khan and Saba Qamar comedy-drama was a breath of fresh air. The film, which was made on a budget of 23 crores and was judged to be delightfully relatable by audiences, grossed around 70 crores at the box office.

9. Shubh Mangal Sadhana

Ayushmann and Bhumi's chemistry has wowed audiences since their debut collaboration for Dum Laga Ke Haisha. In Shubh Mangal Savdhan, the two replicated the same enchantment in cinema with a fresh plot. The film, which was made on a budget of 25 crores, grossed around 60 crores in its final run.

10. Newton

Newton was the surprise hit of 2017 and justifiably so, despite being made on a minimal budget of 15 crores. India's official submission to the Oscars, the movie did not just feature a superb storyline but also showcased incredibly amazing performances by both Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi. It's no surprise that the film grossed a total of 22.80 crores in its lifetime.
