Types of Cactus found in India
Cactus is a plant which is grown in native to arid, dry and drought regions. Basically, they are found in diverse range of shape, size and colour. The spines in the cactus plant are the modified leaves that change their form to prevent the loss of water. Cactus generally have thick and fleshy stem which is used to retain water. There are varieties of cactus found in India.
Some of the varieties which are found in India are:
- Opuntia Ficus – Indica
They are also known as Indian Fig Opuntia, Barbary Fig, Cactus pear and prickly pear. These species of cactus is most famous for its edible fruit. The plant have flat and circular leave like pads which are actually the modified stems. These stems are used to store water, produce flowers and do photosynthesis.
- Opuntia Microdasys
The plant has yellow to red glochids instead of the spines. They are popularly known as bunny cactus, bunny angel and polka dot cactus. The bunny like structure gives the plant a cute look.
- Cereus Diffusus
The cactus plant has a clump of 5 to 10 long ribs on every stems. The best thing about this plant is that it produces a white flower during the night time with mesmerizing fragnance. This is one of the best types of cactus plant found in India.
