Adipurush Movie Budget & Controversies Explained

Adipurush appears to be one of those movies which use the general public's outrage to their benefit. Though it is often said that there is no such thing as bad press, it can certainly cost you money. Following the release of the teaser in October 2022, the film quickly became a subject of discussion on television. Initially, it was set to be released on January 12, but the anger caused by the teaser necessitated changes to be made. Reports indicate that 100 crores were spent to modify the allegedly 'objectionable' visual effects and editing. The overall budget of Adipurush was an extravagant 600 crores.

Early Controversies

The movie caused a lot of debate due to the unusual look of the leading characters. It was a modern-day adaptation of Ramayana, which led to many people being unhappy when they saw Lord Ram, Laxman, and even Ravana in an unfamiliar outfit.

Some fans did not think Saif Ali Khan was suitable for the role of Ravana since his costume and makeup resembled the character of Khilji, with dark kajal and spiky hair. There were also doubts about Prabhas being cast as Rama by the general audience. Additionally, Sunny Singh’s portrayal of Laxman in the teaser upset many viewers as he was seen with a leather belt.

Director’s clarification

Om Raut, the movie's director, released a statement declaring that Adi Purush was more than just a film for him; it was a show of reverence to Lord Rama. He also expressed that the production represented their loyalty to their customs and past. In addition, Raut shared some of his feelings regarding the unfavorable criticism, and insisted that the movie was intended to be seen in theatres.
