Award Winning Indian Movies And Web-Series To Watch
Although 2020 has not been a goody-goody year for cinemas at least, films still have reached the epitome of success through being released on various OTT platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Their success is reflected in the amount of international awards these films received which is surely to make India proud. Have you watched these thrilling and exciting, internationally awarded Indian web-series and movies?
1. Delhi Crime
In the 48th International Emmy Awards recently, Delhi Crime became the first Indian web-series to win the best drama series. It was based on the 2012 Delhi-gang rape and murder case. The show was directed by an Indian-Canadian director Richie Mehta, starring Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain and Rajesh Tailang.
In the same award function, various Indian web-series such as Made in Heaven and Four More Shots Please for Best Comedy Series.
2. Gully Boy:
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the movie has gained the best original music award for musician Karsh Kale and the Salvage Audio Collective at the 14th Annual Asian Film Awards. The movie stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, revolving around the story of a budding street rapper and his love life.
The movie was also nominated in the same category as the Oscar winning Parasite.
3. The Disciple
Released on September 4, 2020 in Venice, ‘The Disciple’ is a Marathi film directed, written and edited by Chaitanya Tamhane. The movie has become the first Indian film in 30 years to win at the Venice Film Festival. Its predecessor was ‘Mathikulal’, which was directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan in 1990.
It revolves around a person called Sharad Nerulkar who has deep passion for music and devoted his life to Indian classical music vocalist.
4. Pareeksha
Originally released in Novemner 2019, the movie bagged the actor Adil Hussain the Best Actor award at Indo-German film week in Berlin. The movie was directed and produced by Prakash Jha and it was released on Zee 5. It revolves around Bucchi, a rickshaw driver, who strives to get his son Bulbul, the best possible education.
5. The Family Man
Directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the show won four big awards at the Asian Academy Creative Awards. The Family Man was released on Amazon Prime, which bagged Manoj Bajpayee as the Best Actor in the lead role. Moreover, the show also won the title of Best Series along with rewarding the directors with the award of Best Director. In addition to this, Suman Kumar, Raj and DK won the award of Best Screenplay.
The show was released on 20th September 2019, which is based on Srikant Tiwari who is a middle-class family man and a world-class spy.
Directed by Anu Menon and Nupur Asthana, the show won the Best Web Series Award at the 6th Web Series Festival Global in Hollywood. The second season of the show was originally released on April 17, 2020, starring Kirti Kulhari, Maanvi Gagroo, Sayani Gupta and Gurbani Judge, who jointly received the award of the Best Rising Star at the Asian Content Awards 2020, held at the Busan International Film Festival.
The show is based upon four girl best friends who get together again to solve the intricate problems of their lives with a little of love and laughetr.
7. Mai Ghat: Crime No 103/2005
Initially released in 2019, Mai Ghaat: Crime No 103/2005 is a Marathi movie, directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, featuring Usha Jadhav. Based on a real-life story, the movie has been inspired from a Kerela woman, Prabhavati Amma fighting and winning the legal battle to sought justice for her son, Udayakumar’s death in 2005.
Usha Jadhav won the Best Actor Female Award for her performance in the movie.
8. Biriyaani
Sajin Babu directed Malayalam-language Biriyaani, features Kani Kusrati. It revolves around two young muslim women in the capital of women and the story of their journey of religious struggles as well as societal norms. The actress, Kani Kusrati won the second Best Actress award at the Imagine Film Festival in Madrid, Spain for her performance in the movie.
9. The Sleepwalkers
Released on June 17, 2020, ‘The Sleepwalkers’, is a short thriller film revolving around a couple who find themselves in a delusional state, unsure whether they are sleepwalking or not. The movie stars Radhika Apte, which is a debut for the actress in a short film. ‘The Sleepwalkers’ has also received the accolade of the Best Midnight Short Award at Palms Spring International Short fest.
10. Puglya
Directed by the Malayali filmmaker Vinod Sam Peter, Puglya is a Marathi film which revolves around two boys of 10 years old, Rushab and Datta and a pug. It has received a number of accolades such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Music Trophies at Los Angeles’ World Premiere Film Awards.
11. Eternal Canvas
Eternal Canvas is a Bengali film which has won the Hollywood Gold Award for the Best Short Film, Best Costume Designer and Best Soundtrack so far at Europe Film Festival in London. The movie features actress Devlina Kumar and Papia Adhikari.
The film is yet to be released in the several OTT platforms.
