Bollywood's Box Office Report for Q1 2023: Pathaan Emerges as Dominant Force with 521 Crore Collection

Pathaan's Exceptional Performance Makes Q1 2023 a Decent Quarter for Hindi Film Industry

The Hindi Film Industry has achieved satisfactory results in the first quarter of the year, primarily due to the exceptional performance of Pathaan and a few other average-grossing films. However, before assessing the performance of upcoming films in the second quarter, it is essential to evaluate the individual performance of the movies released in the first quarter.

Pathaan Makes History with Record-Breaking Business in January

The first notable release of the year, Kuttey, failed to generate significant revenue in theaters, opening to a disappointing Rs 1 crore nett and earning less than Rs 5 crores nett throughout its run. In contrast, the highly anticipated film Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, and directed by Siddharth Anand, created a sensation at the box office. The film's Hindi version alone amassed over Rs 520 crores nett, making it the highest grossing Hindi film in India. The worldwide total for the movie stands at over Rs 1050 crores, with a nett India total of around Rs 540 crores nett.

February's Box Office: Shehzada and Selfiee Fail to Impress, Prove to be Box Office Duds

After the triumph of Pathaan, the box office witnessed the release of two underwhelming films. Shehzada, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon, struggled to generate revenue, earning just over Rs 30 crores nett domestically and less than Rs 50 crores worldwide, ultimately failing at the box office. Selfiee, starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, also proved to be a commercial failure, with a meager domestic nett collection of less than Rs 20 crores and a worldwide gross of around Rs 30 crores. This performance by an A-list movie is undoubtedly the worst at the box office.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway Bring Some Relief to Hindi Film Industry

At a time when the industry was struggling, the success of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway brought much-needed relief. The rom-com, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor and directed by Luv Ranjan, became the second Indian film to cross Rs 100 crores nett domestically this year, with current collections at Rs 128 crores nett. The movie has a worldwide gross of approximately Rs 190 crores, and its lifetime total is expected to be around Rs 195 crores, giving it an average theatrical verdict. Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, a smaller film with limited theatrical release and starring Rani Mukerji, has earned over Rs 20 crores nett in India and approximately Rs 35 crores worldwide, securing an average verdict. However, Kapil Sharma's Zwigato failed to make an impact, with a lifetime nett collection of just Rs 1.5 crores in India.

Bholaa Opens Strong but Fails to Sustain Momentum at Box Office

After Bheed failed to attract audiences, Bholaa, starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, was the final noteworthy release of the first quarter. The film started on a positive note, but failed to maintain its momentum at the box office. It is expected to have a lifetime collection of around Rs 80-85 crore nett in India, and a worldwide total of approximately Rs 110-115 crores. While the film initially showed potential to become an average theatrical success, it ended up being a below-average grosser at the box office.
