The video of Commissioner Roshan Jacob of Lucknow inspecting the flooding effects of the torrential rain that hit the city has gone viral on social media. This is not the first time she has taken matters into her own hands to evaluate the circumstances.

Following the tragedy of nine people, including two children and women, being killed when a wall collapsed due to the extreme downpours, Roshan Jacob demonstrated her readiness to assess the conditions in Jankipuram and other nearby areas. She exemplifies the idea of an official who will always put their duty first and is known for her willingness to act and make changes in trying conditions.

Who is IAS Roshan Jacob? 

Roshan Jacob, a 45-year-old lady from Kerala, was born in Trivandrum. She became an IAS officer in 2004 and was appointed as the in-charge District Magistrate of Lucknow on April 17th when the serving DM tested positive for COVID-19. Her mother, Aleyamma Varghese, and her father, TK Jacob, were both employed by the government in Kerala. Jacob is an only child and studied at Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Trivandrum before going to Government College for Women to pursue a degree in Bachelor's, followed by one in English Master's at Kerala University.

Jacob is a mother of two children and married to her batch mate, Dr Arindam Bhattacharya, an Indian Foreign Service officer working with the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi. She is famously the first Indian to author a book in Mandarin Chinese and has successfully completed her PhD as a UGC Junior Research Fellow (JRF) while still in-service.

Jacob’s work in Uttar Pradesh?

Jacob's initial appointment in Uttar Pradesh was as a probationary Indian Administrative Service (IAS) official in Jhansi and she is also the first female to lead the Mining Department of the state.

In addition to her successive roles in various departments, Jacob was eventually appointed as District Magistrate (DM) of Basti, Gonda, Kanpur Nagar, Rae Bareli and Bulandshahar.
