Munjya Ending Explained

Munjya (2024) Ending Explained: Does Bittu Save Bela from Munjya?

Plot Summary of Munjya

Munjya revolves around a young boy who becomes obsessed with marrying his neighbor’s daughter, Munni, despite her being seven years older. His fixation leads to tragic consequences when, during Munni’s wedding, he attempts a dark magic ritual involving his younger sister, resulting in his own death when she defends herself. The boy’s spirit, feared to become a Munjya (a child ghost), is bound to a tree by the villagers and priests to prevent further havoc.

Years later, Bittu, a geeky young man, returns to his hometown for his cousin Rukku’s wedding. He discovers that his father was killed while trying to cut down the tree housing Munjya's spirit. Bittu’s grandmother, Aaji, reveals that she was Munjya’s sister and inadvertently caused his death. Despite her efforts to save Bittu, Munjya imprints on him and follows him home, leading to a series of chilling events.

Who is Munjya?

Munjya is the vengeful spirit of the young boy who died while performing a dark ritual. Aaji, Bittu’s grandmother, shares the backstory, explaining how Munjya became tied to the tree and his deep-seated grudge, especially toward Aaji, who he blames for his death.

Why is Munjya After Bittu?

Munjya follows Bittu, intent on forcing him to locate Munni so he can marry her. However, Munni's aged appearance leads Munjya to change his mind, deciding instead to marry Bela, Munni’s granddaughter, who bears a striking resemblance to Munni.

The Role of Elvis Karim Prabhakar

Elvis Karim Prabhakar, a religious leader, educates Bittu about the Munjya legend and advises him to follow Munjya's instructions to avoid harm. He suggests using a sheep as a vessel for Munjya’s spirit during the marriage ritual, which Bittu plans to exploit to save Bela.

The Climactic Ritual and Munjya's Fate

Bittu takes Bela to his hometown under false pretenses. As they prepare for the ritual, Bela’s boyfriend, Kuba, arrives, complicating matters. Munjya, enraged by Kuba’s attempt to kiss Bela, attacks him, leading to a series of chaotic events. The ritual backfires when Munjya possesses Bela instead of the sheep, forcing Bittu and his cousins to fight back. Ultimately, Munjya’s spirit inhabits Rukku’s father’s body, causing further havoc.

How Does Bittu Save Bela?

In a moment of desperation, Bittu recalls Aaji’s teachings and uses the cane that Munjya fears to beat him out of Rukku’s father’s body. Munjya retreats to his original tree, where Bittu and Bela work together to burn it, effectively destroying Munjya. The ordeal ends with Bittu confessing his feelings to Bela, who gently rebuffs him, choosing to remain friends.

The Conclusion of Munjya

The cursed tree is cut down and transported to another village, symbolizing the end of Munjya's terror. However, the film leaves a lingering hint of Munjya’s possible return in a post-credit scene where Bhaskar, transformed into a werewolf, utters Munni's name, stirring Munjya from his slumber.
