Priyanka Chopra’s Reaction To The Patriarchal World

Check out all the details of one of the most intimate incidents happened with Priyanka Chopra during the inception of her career.

The global superstar Priyanka Chopra recently released her memoir ‘Unfinished’, which is already topping the bestseller list in Amazon. In her book, she has shares some of her most intimate incidents that happened in her life and one of them unveils the patriarchy of Bollywood industry that reeks of male gaze.

Patriarchy in Bollywood is not new but when PC had recently joined the career, she had borne the brunt of it and she mentions the same in her book. She explains that in the beginning of her career she had bagged a big Bollywood blockbuster, in which she was supposed to dance to a seductive song. In that long four-minute song, she was supposed to remove her clothes slowly. Priyanka had suggested that it would be better if she donned a lot of layers, like jackets and ribbons, to make it more seductive.

Upon her director’s order she asked the stylist about this and when she passed the phone to her director, he had said, ‘Jo bhi ho, chaddiyan dikhni chahiye. Nahin toh log picture dekhne kyon aayenge?’ (Whatever happens, panties should be seen. Otherwise, why would people come to watch the movie?)

Priyanka Chopra immediately felt that this was unacceptable because she will be viewed as an object and perceived from a male gaze. Keeping these situations in mind, she decided to quit the very next day. She mentions, ‘I am not whatever character i am playing, and I wasn’t willing to be directed by someone who saw me that way. Instead, I trusted my intuition and exited.’

Before she decided to quit, she had shot for two days already and therefore to compensate for the loss, she also paid the producer for 13-14 weeks of her shoot. Rumors suggest that the movie was ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’, as her co-star was Salman Khan. On hearing the news of her exit, the producer was very angry. However, Salman Khan intervened and helped in calming the situation down for everyone.

Is the patriarchy still prevalent in Bollywood? What do you think? Please share your views in the comment section below.
