Rasbhari is Swara Bhaskar’s latest series. The series captures the small-town milieu of Meerut perfectly. Swara plays the role of an English teacher named Shanu who comes to live in Meerut with her husband and overnight becomes the fantasy of her students and neighbours. Comfortable with her beauty and sexuality, she is branded a ‘husband snatcher’ by the women of the town while the men cannot stop thinking about her.

The writer Shantanu Shrivastava and director Nikhil Bhat have introduced an interesting alter-ego for Shanu – the ghost of a courtesan, Rasbhari. Is Shanu the husband snatcher she is said to be or is it Rasbhari, the ghost, calling the shots? The series is a metaphor of how sexually represses India is. The series takes its time before it gets going. The first few episodes will try your patience as they establish Shanu as the sex siren of Meerut. After you cross this hurdle, you will discover the interesting characters that inhabit the show.

It is a layered and mature project and a lot more than what the trailer showed. It shows us how women are suppressed and stereotyped in our society for expressing their desires, even by other women. It also shows how boys are allowed to hang out late but girls aren’t.

It treads the thin line between sleaze and erotic well but falters at certain places. Shanu’s interaction with the cable guy is dealt with voyeuristically. A part of the audience may also find the idea of accepting extramarital affairs morally questionable. It falters as it tries to do too much without focusing on one theme. Sexual awakening, oppression of women, social pressure on women, social pressure on women, and small-town desires are all rammed into the eight episodes with desultory results.

If you have a list of things to watch I won’t suggest you watch Rasbhari in particular but if you have nothing to watch you can go for it.
