Former Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry passes away in road accident

On September 4, Cyrus Mistry, the former Chairman of Tata Sons, passed away in a car accident while traveling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. The vehicle he was in collided with a divider on the Surya River Charoti bridge located on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway. He was 54 years old and is survived by his wife Rohiqa Chagla and two sons, Zahan Mistry and Firoz Mistry.

Mistry's family has announced that his final ceremonies will take place on Tuesday, September 6th in Mumbai. His funeral will be held at the Worli crematorium in Mumbai at 11 am. Throughout his most challenging boardroom struggle with the Tata family, Rohiqa Chagla, Cyrus Mistry's wife, has remained steadfastly by his side for nearly three decades.

Who is  Rohiqa Chagla?

After tying the knot in 1992, Chagla and Mistry remained married until his untimely passing. Rohiqa Chagla is also an accomplished business leader, having served as a director for several private and public limited companies. The Mistry family's business empire, which is primarily comprised of real estate and its holdings in the Tata Group, has played a significant role in constructing awe-inspiring hotels, stadiums, palaces, and factories across Asia. Cyrus Mistry gained widespread recognition after being appointed as the successor to lead the Tata Group, but his tenure ultimately sparked one of the most talked-about corporate feuds in the country.

Rohiqa Chagla comes from a family of accomplished individuals, including her father, barrister Iqbal Chagla, and her grandfather, M.C. Chagla, a former cabinet minister and jurist. During the boardroom dispute between her husband Cyrus Mistry and the Tata family, her family became legally involved. Mistry was appointed as the Chairman of Tata Sons in 2012, but his unexpected resignation in 2016 ignited a prolonged and intense legal battle and corporate feud between two of India's most prominent business families: the Mistrys and the Tatas.

After serving as Tata Sons' sixth chairman, Mistry stepped down from his position in October 2016. He had assumed the role of chairman in December 2012 following Ratan Tata's retirement. Following Mistry's resignation, N Chandrasekaran was appointed as the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons.

The Supreme Court declined the Sapoorji Pallonji (SP) group's plea for a review of the 2021 verdict in May. The verdict had upheld the Tata group's decision to dismiss Cyrus Mistry from his role as the executive chairman of Tata Sons.

The sudden demise of Mistry is a significant loss for the SP group and the corporate world as a whole. The tragic incident took place at around 3:15 p.m while Mistry was travelling in his Mercedes car with other individuals. The Superintendent of Police for Palghar district, Balasaheb Patil, confirmed the incident, stating that two other passengers were injured along with the car's driver. All of the injured individuals have been taken to a hospital in Gujarat for treatment.

Following the passing of Cyrus Mistry's father, Pallonji Mistry, in June, Cyrus Mistry's untimely demise is yet another setback for the Mistry family.
