Rohit Shetty’s upcoming film, ‘Sooryavanshi’ has been garnering limelight even before it went on the floor. Sometimes it’s for the star-studded cast, while others for the on-set comedies featuring the film actors Akshay, Ranveer, Ajay Devgn and Katrina. However, this time the upcoming flick is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. A day before the occasion of International Women’s Day, Rohit’s derogatory response towards Katrina pissed her fans and they responded by making #ShameOnRohitShetty viral. It all started when Rohit narrated an incident where Katrina asked him for a retake of a shot in the film.

Rohit casual comment that no one will notice Katrina in the same frame as Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar in Sooryavanshi has taken its ‘troll’ on his image. According to Rohit, it was a flippant funny throwaway comment but it has blown up into some serious trolling for the director who doesn’t know what hit him. Rohit was just pulling his buddy Katrina’s leg by saying this. But it has cost him some serious trolling. And because of this Rohit even unfollowed Katrina Kaif on Istagram.

In the industry, sexist comments are so normalized that a powerful filmmaker like Rohit Shetty failed to draw the line between casual facetiousness and serious sexism. He didn’t know when he crossed the line. Katrina won’t be noticed in the same frame as the three male superstars speak of a deep flaw in our society where a woman is noticed only when there are no men around. It’s like the old tradition in the country for women, in a family she would be eating only after the men had their fill.

This trolling against the big director got so vehement that Katrina had to step in to remind her fans that Rohit Shetty was just joking. This is the other problem in the film industry. Women are afraid to take a stand in case they lose important projects. She came to Rohit’s defence and clarified his alleged sexist comment about her, saying it was highly misconstrued. It all happened when he called her ‘beauty with brains.’ She took it to Instagram to give her two cents on the matter after her fans made #ShameOnYouRohitShetty trend on twitter.

She said,

dear friends and well-wishers I normally don’t comment or media reports or articles… but in this case, I feel a comment made by Rohit Sir has been taken out of context and is being entirely misunderstood

. I am referring to the comment as reported that Rohit Shetty said, ‘no one would look at me in the frame, as there are three boys there and a blast happening,’ this isn’t what was said.’

She further added, ‘I mentioned that I had blinked in the shot, and Rohit sir said, ‘there are four people together in the frame and a bomb blast happening, no one would notice you blinking.’ Even, despite that, we still did one more take. This has been entirely taken out of context. Hope you all have a great day.’

Before this, in an interview, Rohit mentioned Katrina’s request for re-shooting the climax scene. He said, ‘if you look closely, she is blinking.’ After the fourth take, she came to me and asked, ‘can we take one more?’ and I said, ‘Katrina, I will tell you honestly, no one is going to look at you.’ She got so wild. She said, ‘How can you tell me this?’ and I said, ‘three guys are walking with blasts happening behind, nobody is going to notice you.’ And I kept that shot. In the promo, she blinks while walking, but Kaun Dekhega? This is all that Rohit said.

It wasn’t the first time that the men from the flick Sooryavanshi have been criticized for making offensive remarks on the female lead of the film. According to leading media reports, Akshay Kumar who has worked in projects promoting women empowerment passed a slighting Comment on Katrina.

He started by saying that,

I have become a big fan of Katrina Kaif, earlier I was a fan of her beauty. She has done so brilliantly in this film. And hats off to her that a woman, who didn’t even know a word of Hindi, came to Bollywood and today is working with such big heroes. A big round of applause for her.

One of the netizens called the incidence out and said, ‘1st lead actor and now the director of the film demeaned Katrina with their derogatory remark. We all talk about equality and women empowerment but as long as these misogynists utter such shit there is no point in women’s day.
