Sairat is a 2016 Marathi language Indian film romantic drama film in the direction of Nagraj Manjule under the banner of Aatpat Production along with Nittin Keni, Nikhil Sane under the Essel Vision Production and Zee Studios. The movie featuring Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar, in their acting debut portrays the love drama of two college affectionate students belonging to different castes in which the parental feud erupts.
The concept of the story was preformed by Manjule in 2009 when had witnessed caste discrimination, however Manjule discarded the story thinking that the concept was boring. He then filmed a movie called Fandry in 2013; later, he rewrote and finished the script for the same in 2014. The screenplay was exclusively by Manjule and the dialogues were done by his brother Bharat. The village scenes were taken in director Manjule’s native village of Jeur which is in Karmala Taluka of Solapur district, Maharashtra. The director of the film was Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti, the director of photography was Suresh Ragutapu and Kutub Inamdar was the film editor.
Sairat was screened at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival , following this the cast received a standing ovation. It was premiered on 29 April 2016 in Maharashtra and several other locations in India and at large, the film was well received by critics. It became hit and became the first Marathi film to earn the highest amount at box office. Rajguru bagged the National Film Award – Special Mention at the 63rd National Film Awards. : Sairat has won 11 awards from the filmfare Marathi awards of the year 2017 in the awards it was honored with the awards of the Best film, Best director for Manjule, Best Actress for Rajguru and the Best music album. New talent awards went to Rajguru in the box office Best Debut female category while Thosar clinched the Best Debut male category. The film was remade in several languages: Chalmaaraya Manasu Mallige (2017) in Kannada, Punjabi Channa Mereya (2017), Laila O Laila (2017) in Odia, Bengali Noor Jahaan (2018) and Rajasthani Dhadak (2018) also had my songs.
