Taali: Bajaungi Nahi Bajwaungi Review

Taali is a biopic on the life and journey of Shree Gauri Sawant. The series went live on Jio Cinemas on 15th Aug 2023. You can watch it there for free. The casting of the series has Sushmita Sen (Ganesh, ShreeGauri), Krutika Deo (Young Ganesh), Ankur Bhatia (Navin ), Aishwarya Narkar (Ganesh's mother), Nandu Madhav (Ganesh's father), Hemangi Kavi (Ganesh's sister), Sheetal Kale (Nargis), Suvrat Joshi (Munna), Chetan Sinde (Guru), Maya Rechal Mcmanus (Amanda), Zoya Humanyu (Gunjan), Amit Bhel (JK) in few roles along with others. It has been directed by Ravi Jadhav.

I was very excited to watch Sushmita Sen in such a bold character after this long as she had been promoting and talking a lot about the story. The story is of a transgender and how as a child he struggled for his identity and survival. The story begins with ShreeGauri filing a petition in the Supreme Court for the recognition of the transgender community. She has been accompanied by Amanda who wants to know about Gauri's life in details to publish about her. Gauri narrate her entire story of how as a young boy he was always interested in girly things and he was different. All of his acts where not supported by his father. After the death of his mother, he left his house as his father understood about his gender and he was struggling for shelter. Later, with the help of his sister, he found Navin, who is a gay and he helps Gauri throughout her journey. Ganesh then later undergoes sex operation and converts himself to Gauri.

There are six episodes in the series and each one has a lesson for the audience. The series has beautifully shown the struggle and challenges faced by the genders other than male and female. There is a monologue of Sushmita as Gauri during an interview in the series where she speaks about how scary they feel to live around the males and females and the discrimination they do. I really loved the monologue and it was heart-touching as well as an eye-opener. Talking about the characters, my favourite would definately be Gauri but I equally like Nargis and Navin in the series, They were the backbones of the lead role.

I would rate this series a 4/5.
