When I say movies set in a mental asylum, you must think of some serious crime based movie with medical terms and the lead being insane. Well, this isn't the case in all the stories but ya most of them have this theme. Being insane means not having a normal state of mind and prevent normal social behaviour. Today, I will be listing some of the best movies set in a mental asylum.
10. I’M A CYBORG, BUT THAT’S OK (2006)
It is a korean romantic drama based on a mental asylm. It is a cute movie. The story shows amazing love and the way we people try to accept and believe in others' feelings. If you are fond of Korean movies then you must definately watch this one.
9. DOGRA MAGRA (1988) | TOSHIO MATSUMOTO
This movie is based on a novel. It is a story of an insane man who talks to a doctor of a mental asylum. There are many unanswered questions in the film which are haunting. There's a lot of puzzle, mystery in the story that have different points.
8. ANGELS OF THE UNIVERSE (2000) | DIR. FRIÐRIK ÞÓR FRIÐRIKSSON
THis films deals with the nature of inanity in the life of an unsuccessful artist. The leads goes into madness when he is rejected by the girl he loved. Later, he was placed in a mental asylum, where he becomes friends with an amazing character. I won't tell you much about this character as I would ask to to watch the movie for it. The story has a poetic beauty as well.
7. THE NINTH CONFIGURATION (1980) | DIR. WILLIAM PETER BLATTY
The movie starts in an abandoned castle that has been tranformed into a mental asylum. The head was appointed to use unusual methods to treat the people there. Here, the head comes in contact with a patient who argues about everything from God to politics with him. The relationship between these two characters doesn't get sorted till the end and ou will see this to be one of the best things.

This is kind of a horror movie. There are two approaches shown to run an asylum, one founded on freedom while the other one is no control and punishment. Ayoung man withness a lot of nightmares. The makers vision of madness has no boundaries. The character's lost humanity will haunt the corridors of your minds.

This film showcases an idealised atmostphere for mental asylum and shows how some mentl illnesses can be cured through better communication. Both the characters are awaken for a better future. There are various beautiful moments in the film, that will make your heart glow. It is a typical boy meets girl story but from a diffrent angle. The boy is extremely intelligent but turns aggressive when touched.

The movie has a grant opening. The movie has great density, atmosphere and performance. The story is based on criminally insane patients.

The plot speaks for a newspaper reporter who wants to unravel the mystery of a murder which happened in a hospital. He risks his sanity to get into thr mental aylum to collect evidences and fitnness to prove his point. He crams political and social observations through the emotional suffering of the people there.

This is one of my favourite's in the list. It is a powerful and free spirit drama and this is very engaging. The inhuman treatment in mental asylums is amazing highlighted with the right amount of humour. McMurphy’s crusade for liberation or battle of wills provides abundant life lessons and the film’s final image of freedom is rich and impactful in its imagery that it still stays fresh in my mind.
