Amrita chose to abandon her financially rewarding job to focus on her marriage and become a full-time housewife to care for her family and children, yet this was not enough to keep her marriage together. Despite the lack of an official explanation regarding the cause of Saif and Amrita's divorce after 13 years of marriage, many suggest that Saif Ali Khan's extramarital relationships and waning love for Amrita resulted in their split. 

It was suggested that Saif's close relationship with Italian dancer and model, Rosa Catalona was the cause of his breakup with Amrita. In a 2005 interview, Saif dismissed the reports and said it was Amrita's altered attitude towards him and his family that caused their relationship to deteriorate. In an interview in 2005, Saif disclosed that he had already given Amrita roughly ₹2.5 crores out of the ₹5 crore he had promised her. He additionally mentioned that he would be paying her ₹1 lakh each month until his son reaches the age of 18.

After the divorce, both of them went their separate ways and chose to continue onward in life. Saif found love in Kareena and married her, while Amrita decided to remain single so she could focus on raising her children, Sara and Ibrahim.
