During a recent trip to Ahmedabad, Vicky Kaushal checked off fafda-jalebi, khaman, and khandvi from his bucket list. "I realised that, in addition to being great hosts, Gujaratis, like Punjabis, believe that no food can be unhealthy." We believe in khao aur mazze karo as well!" Vicky spoke candidly about his project choices, his pleasant recollections of Ahmedabad, and even provided some advice for a happily married life.
I used to do a lot of plays in school. I was a good dancer and a passable actor, but I never imagined that acting would be my career. When I was a second-year engineering student, I suppose the turning moment came on an industry visit to Navi Mumbai.
'This is where you will be coming after graduation,' our professor said. Something snapped in me as I watched individuals slumped behind their computer workstations, eyes glued to their displays. I understood I couldn't do it; I wasn't built for a 9-to-5 career. I decided to pursue my passion for performing in front of an audience. There has been no turning back for me since then. The best teacher I could have had was theatre. It taught me to be present rather than think and act.
Why he became an actor
When I'm working on a script narration, I start with the audience in mind. I try to see if I can relate to the subject as an audience member, and if so, I immediately say yes to the idea. But I also make sure that there is something new for me--whether it's the screenplay or the character--that pushes me as a performer and that I haven't done before. I also examine the director and the production company.
How Vicky selects his films
My entire family is involved in the film industry, from my father Sham Kaushal (action director) to my brother Sunny (actor) to my wife Katrina. We frequently talk about our initiatives and give our thoughts. Healthy input and thoughts are provided about what may or may not work for us in a specific endeavour. We once spent so much time at the dinner table discussing a work project that my mother (Veena) made it a family rule that we would never discuss work at supper!
Talking about work projects with his family
Patience is required for both spouses in any marriage for it to work smoothly. It is difficult for two people to always agree on everything. This is when comprehension and maturity come into play. In the last year and a half of my marriage, I've realised that patience is the key to growing together in a wonderful way. I strive to be the greatest spouse I can be at any given time. I adore my wife, I adore my family, and I adore life. But, like any other man, I have flaws.
How to have a happy married life
We used to bring our plays to Ahmedabad rather frequently when I was in the theatre. I've also visited the city to promote my flicks over the years. Ahmedabad has a terrific vibe, and the people are quite kind. I also enjoy the cuisine. During this trip, I had some great Gujarati snacks, which helped my diet. For the first time, I tried kadhi, which was sweet and excellent.
