Why Celebs Don’t Speak Out On Indian Issues
Celebs are often at the receiving end of criticism for their opinions on public matters. Is it tough being an opinionated celeb in this country? Read our article for more details!
It is tough being a celebrity with a particular opinion on sensitive issues. Many celebrities came out in support of the black Americans, who were protesting for equal rights. But on seeing this, the leftists in India attacked the celebs for not speaking or taking a stand during the CAA movement. Not a single celebrity talked about this movement or the situation in North-East India.
The celebrities were also seen holding placards which said, migrant lives matter, Muslim lives matter, Dalit lives matter. This then irked the right-wing who attacked the celebrities for not speaking up against lynching of sadhus. After this, celebrities started sharing, ‘all lives matter’. This too didn’t go well with some section of the people. They still attacked celebrities.
A lot of celebs have seen their movie screenings, their lucrative brand endorsements contracts getting canceled thanks to their statements on burning issues. Theatres screening Shahrukh Khan’s movie My Name Is Khan, was attacked by Shiv Sena. Aamir Khan paid a heavy price for crying intolerance, which led to his Snapdeal brand endorsement deal getting affected.
Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher are at the receiving end of barbs from leftists for his pro-Modi stance. Swara Bhaskar, Sonam Kapoor, Richa Chadha, Javed Akhtar, etc are attacked by right-wing trolls.
That explains why we find celebrities speaking only on global issues. They rarely talk about the situations and social issues of India. On the other hand, people also want celebs to say what they want to hear. They say they want the celebrities to take a stand, but their actions say otherwise.
This explains why some mature celebs like Kriti Sanon, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, etc. never publically state their opinions on any topic or issue. They also get attacked but for being cowards which is bearable.
Many times we have seen Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan being attacked and trolled for taking a stand or putting forward their opinions on certain sensitive topics. Sonu Nigam was attacked for speaking against loudspeakers.
While Sonu Nigam spoke against loudspeakers, his tweets were taken as questions against the need to mosques in India to use a loudspeaker while calling out for daily prayers to devotees. While his tweets spoke out against loudspeakers used by all religions, it was given an anti-muslim angle. He just put forward his opinion on loudspeakers but people took it in the wrong way. He has since stayed silent on all public issues.
