People all over India are Maida lovers. No matter what they like to prepare even their comfort foods in maida. But they might be unaware of the fact that it has consequences on our health and hence is referred to as ‘white poison’.

Why Unhealthy?

  1. Elevates Blood sugar: Maida has a high glycaemic Index which means when you eat something made of it, a lot of sugar is released directly into your bloodstream, and your blood sugar level spikes. To prevent this, your pancreas has to work overtime to produce sufficient insulin. Your pancreas can handle the load if you consume maida occasionally but consuming maida frequently can plummet the insulin secretion eventually causing diabetes.

  2. Offsets Cholesterol Balance: Good cholesterol (HDL) in the body helps to remove bad cholesterol (LDL). Maida raises LDL to the limit where HDL couldn’t combat that, leading to heart diseases, kidney problems, and high blood pressure.

  3. Weakens Bones: Maida is acidic in nature. Consuming maida in access, your body has to draw calcium to resist the extra acid. The excess acid can also cause inflammation and arthritis.

  4. Aggravates Hormonal Imbalance:  PCOS is a very common disease in women. It is related to insulin resistance and low-grade inflammation. 

  5. Disrupts Digestion: Usually, wheat whole grains are packed with fiber that aids in regular bowel movement and eliminates unwanted toxins. However, maida becomes a glue-like substance in our gut, clogging up the system and causing constipation.
