Know About Open Pores, Ageing Skin Correlation Treatment

Open pores, also known as "uneven skin" or "holes on the face," is one of the common cosmetic problems, though this condition has yet to be classified as a dermatological one. The manifestations occur when the openings of the oil glands become large; thus, it causes a dull and uneven skin, especially if the reflection of light on the skin is not uniform. Although some people believe that the open pores are scars, they differ from each other, and it is mainly formed on those places that are usually seen on the nose and around cheeks but can also be seen on forehead and side cheeks in people who have oily skin.

Generally, open pores become apparent once puberty has begun because the hormone androgen starts to make the glands secrete more oils. The over-produced oil generally causes blockage at the gland's openings and combined with dead skin cells and other debris appears as distension that is observable and known as open pores. Age spots and ultraviolet rays normally contribute to an irregular or patchy skin texture.

There are a number of treatments that reduce the appearance of open pores, but they work differently. Among the commonly used drugs that can be prescribed to reduce pore size and oil secretion is retinoids in oral and topical preparations. The beta-hydroxy acids are the major active ingredients of most salicylic acid preparations, which help in sebaceous duct exfoliation and reduction in pore size. Such preparations cannot be tolerated by the patients having sensitive and dry skin.

Laser treatments; Fractional CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers stimulate collagen remodeling and have been able to show much success in the therapy of more extensive forms of scarring due to acne. It is also applied for reducing pore sizes, but more work needs to be conducted to fully realize its benefit in this area. A derma roller would stimulate collagen production and has more resemblance with lasers. TCA CROSS chemical peeling has been used with tri-chloro-acetic acid to reduce pore size, using 7-10 days of post-procedure healing time. The outermost layer can be exfoliated with microdermabrasion in conjunction with sucking out the dirt and the oil in pores which would tighten the pores and stimulate more collagen to be produced in the skin.

To put it simply, the primary reasons for open pores include overproduction of sebum, poor hygiene of skin, and pore blocking. Collagen remodeling can be obtained from chemical peels, salicylic acid, retinoids, and laser treatments in pursuit of smoothening as well as equal-looking skin, therefore minimizing apparent open pores.
