10 Best Malayalam Movies Of The Decade

 

From a very long period of time, Malayalam cinema has been badly rewarded for its over the top and unrealistic elements. Meanwhile, we can't deny the fact by saying such movies don't hit screens, every movie industry has hits and flop content.

Anyways, Malayalam cinema industry growed slowly and steadily by breaking the mould it was in for long and now it has been dedicating to the world only movies that are not only great, but also promising world-class appeal. For instance, in the last decade Malayalam movies like 22 Female Kottayam, Banglore Days and Drishyam have been phenomenal which paved a way for larger audiences. 

Ustad Hotel ( 2012 )

The 2012 Malayalam-language drama is a film with equity written by Anjali Menon and directed by Anwar Rasheed. The lead roles are played by Dulquer Sulaman, Thilakan and Nithya Menen, with Siddique, Mamukkoya, and Lena in supporting roles. The story is about Faisi who wishes to visit Uk to become a professional chef there, but situations around him force him to help his grandpa in a small restaurant in Kozhikode city. Wherein this opportunity changes his thoughts on life forever.

Premam isn't just a love drama which follows breakups. But there's a lot of freshness and cultural phenomenon embedded. 2015 Alphonse Puthren directional narrates the story of George and his three romantic love stories/ stages in his life as he passes through the series of events. Firstly, a teenager who is desperate at his high school age who tries to gather attention. Secondly, when he falls for his lady professor but unfortunately that doesn't work. And finally a man who finds his true love.

Virus is a Medical thriller, which is so apt to the current times. The film is a masterpiece with a fictional depiction of the 2018 Nipah Virus Outbreak in a few districts of Kerala, in which 17 people lost their lives to the virus. And also showcases how the government tackles and contains the spread of Virus. The film had some popular and talented cast like Kunchacko Boban, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Tovino Thomas, Revathy, Sreenath Bhasi, Soubin Shahir, Indrajith, Poornima Indrajith, Indrans, Rahman, Madonna Sebastian, Asif Ali, Darshana Rajendran, Rima Kallingal, Joju George and many others.

The 2019 Madhu C. Narayanan's directional movie is about four brothers who live in a small house in a village Kumbalangi and share a hate & love relationship with each other. Their relationship only gets stronger when Saji, Boney and Franky decide to help Bobby in his love. The film stars Shane Nigam, Fahadh Faasil , Soubin Shahir, and Sreenath Bhasi.

Banglore Days ( 2014 )

Uyare ( 2019 )

Starring one of Mollywood's best Heroine Parvathy as an ambitious young lady who wants to become a pilot and also fights for her future and justice as she survives an acid attack from her former boyfriend. She struggles a lot throughout to overcome the traumatic situation and lead a normal life. The film directed by Manu Ashokan also has Asif Ali and Tovino Thomas in leading roles.

Take Off ( 2017 )

The thriller-drama Malayalam film is the beginning of Mahesh Narayan's career. The story tells the suffering of 49 nurses from Kerala who were being held hostage by Iraqi hostages. Although the movie recounts the tragic events taking place in Iraq, the story focuses on one nurse who is involved in rescuing nurses. Her name was Sameera (Parvathy Thiruvothu), and she was pregnant. She contacts the Kerala government through her phone and even reaches out to Indian Embassy in Iraq. Although she was imprisoned with other nurses, she did everything in her power to save her husband, who had been imprisoned along with other doctors by ISIS to treat wounded terrorists. The movie gives us a clear picture of what happened and it is one of the best films in Malayalam.

Kali is an Indian Malayalam-language action drama film directed and co-produced by Sameer Thahir. The story is about a couple, in which the husband had severe anger issues which made him do many things in a wrong way. Whereas, his wife Anjali tries the utmost to induce her husband to control his anger, but he always ends up in a mess. Then on, the story revolves around gangsters, road rage and the self realisation of Siddharth. 

22 Female Kottayam ( 2012 )

22 Female Kottayam is a revenge Malayalam thriller directed by Aashiq Abu and written by Syam Pusukaran and Abhilash S Kumar. The story of the film revolves around a nurse named Tessa (Rima kallingal) from Kottayam who was raped and takes revenge against her tormentors. The movie also received positive acclaim from critics and is widely said to be the start to Malayalam new cinema.

Jeethu Joseph introduced Drishyam to the world audience. The movie has got an immense following for it's kind of taking and suspense invoked in every scene. The main pillar of the movie is Mohanlal who played the role with eyes and sense of humour. The story is about a family man who goes to any extent for his lovable family due to an unexpected crime committed.

The Fahad Fazil, crime political thriller is directed, written and edited by Mahesh Narayanan. The movie has pivotal roles by Fahadh Faasil, Vinay Forrt, and Nimisha Sajayan with Jalaja, Joju George, Dileesh Pothan, and Indrans playing supporting roles. The movie is about Freddy, a criminal who is given a task of eliminating a patriarch named Sulaiman within a given time limit of 14 days. Intriguingly, Sulaiman, an infamous Smuggler is a paternal uncle of Freddy. In their attempt to assure him, a past ridden with crime, death and pain is recounted to Freddy by Sulaiman's mother, his own parents David and Mary, and also finally by Sulaiman himself, each giving their own reasons for their past actions and why Sulaiman deserves the fate in store for him.
