Cold Case(Malayalam) Movie Review
Released in 2021, Cold Case is a Malayalam mystery thriller directed by debutant Tanu Balak. The movie is a touch of supernatural elements with a blend of investigation on the other end. The movie stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli and Anil Nedumangad in pivotal roles. It is produced by Anto Joseph, Jomon T. John and Shameer Mohammed and the music is composed by Prakash Alex.
Beginning on a confusing note, the story of this movie follows a series of paranormal incidents when a fisherman discovers a human skull scraped in a cover. The case is taken over by a Local Cop, ACP Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and he starts investigating to trace down the people involved in the mysterious muder. The rest of the movie moves on the lines of how the cop deals with the procedural investigation and an interlaced horror element linked with the case.
The major plus of the movie is that, the Director has roped in 3-4 acclaimed Malayali actors in the lead roles including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan, Anil among others. They add much required advantage to the film with their excellent performances. The major plot of the film deals with a mysterious homicide and the consequent horror element. The blend of investigation and horror is fresh to watch.
Minus Points:
Many of them believe in the saying that, if you try too hard you will end up having nothing. In this movie the director tries really hard to infuse a lot of elements like- horror, drama, suspense and other elements but at last ends up overcomplicating the main plot. Anyways the foundation looks promising but unnecessary subplots ruin the flow of events.
The first half has a few intriguing moments here and there, but later on things turn out to be boring and flattering in the latter part. But then, the big disclosure at the end seems to be unrealistic in nature. The formation of the climax also does not guarantee.
On the whole, this Malayalam movie is poorly articulated but still it holds the attention of the audience all the way through, despite its interesting set-up. The main lead delivers a top notch performance and a few scenes in the first half rake up the curiosity factor. But every now and then the tempo keeps dropping down with very few surprise elements.
