Zepto is an Indian e-commerce business that specializes in food delivery and groceries. Zepto, which was established in 2020 and debuted in July 2021, gained notoriety as one of the fastest-growing tech businesses in Indian history.

Together with CTO Vohra, CEO Palicha founded Zepto in 2020 when they were just 17 years old. Together, they had previously developed a ride-hailing service in Dubai that was eventually purchased by a local company. Palicha and Vohra made the decision not to attend Stanford University and instead raised their first outside funding from Contrary, a venture capital firm, which offered to invest in the pair instead.

Initially, Palicha and Vohra called their business KiranaKart and concentrated on making grocery delivery easier by collaborating with neighborhood kiranas; however, that strategy did not catch on. While developing the initial iteration of their software, they also took part in Y Combinator's accelerator program. They verticalized their business and changed their name to Zepto in 2021, creating a network of Dark stores that could offer local customers just in 10 minutes.

Over the next 18 months, Zepto established over 100 operational hubs throughout India and raised over $360 million through four fundraising rounds.

Zepto introduced Cafe, a new service that focuses on delivering ready-to-eat meals and coffee, in April 2022.

Controversy

Anand Mahindra made a public statement in April 2022 stating that q-commerce delivery is "inhumane" to the delivery workers that Zepto and its competitors, like Blinkit and Swiggy, hire to complete purchases. In response, Palicha stated that Zepto just needs to travel safe distances of less than 15 kmph to get rapid speed.
