Arunachalam Temple is a significant pilgrimage site for worshippers of Shiva. The combination of Giri Pradakshina (the 14 km sacred walk around Arunachala Hill) and Karthigai Deepam (a major celebration that is held annually) has created this temple as a source of spiritual power. In addition, Arunachalam Temple represents the fire element of the Pancha Bhootas (five elements).
According to tradition, both Lord Shiva and the goddess Parvati manifested as an infinite column of flames here, granting blessings of grace to devout worshippers.
The most favorable time for darshan (viewing of the deity) and performing Giri Pradakshina is from November to February, when it is cool enough for the many devotees who make this pilgrimage. The extreme heat between March and June can make daytime temple visits very uncomfortable. The July to October monsoon season can bring moderate amounts of rainfall, so rain gear is advised.
Travel recommendations include making your hotel reservations in advance if you are planning to go during one of the festival periods. Bring plenty of water and light snacks with you, as well as any necessary over-the-counter medications that you may need to keep near you if you are going to be traveling for any length of time. Do not make late-night trips to unfamiliar rural areas; instead, make use of free GPS navigation that can give you current route information. Remember to dress comfortably and wear suitable footwear for visiting temples.
