Early life
Amala was born in Calcutta to a Bengali Indian Navy officer and an Irish mother. Their family soon shifted to Madras (present-day Chennai) where she was brought up. She has a brother.
Amala holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Bharatanatyam from Kalakshetra college of fine arts, Madras now Chennai. She gave many live performances worldwide. She is fluent in English, Tamil and Telugu, and can understand Bengali.

On June 11, 1992, Amala wed Telugu star Nagarjuna. The couple's son, actor Akhil Akkineni, was born in 1994. She is the actor Naga Chaitanya's stepmother. At the moment, they reside in Hyderabad.

Career
T. Rajendar, along with his wife Usha, visited her home and persuaded her mother to allow her to act in a classical film that would feature her Bharatanatyam dancing. This is how she got into the film industry. That movie was the 1986 box office success Mythili Ennai Kaathali. Following the movie's triumph, she acted in a number of Tamil movies, including Velaikkaran (1987), Panneer Nadhigal (1986), and Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu (1986). She appeared in popular films like Nirnayam and Siva alongside her future husband Akkineni Nagarjuna. Her performance in the 1991 movie Ulladakkam won her praise.
In 1992, she gave up acting after being married to Nagarjuna.She returned in 2012 with the Telugu film Life is Beautiful, following a twenty-year break. For her performance, she was honored with a 2013 Telugu category Filmfare Award for best supporting actress and a CineMAA Award for Best Outstanding Actress.
She made her Malayalam film debut with C/O Saira Banu, following a 25-year hiatus since Ulladakkam.
