The Bania community, also known by the spellings Baniya, Banija, Banya, Vaniya, Vani, and Vania, is a well-known caste of merchants that is mostly from Gujarat and Rajasthan in India. But in Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra (especially Mumbai), Uttar Pradesh, and other northern regions, they have built sizable diasporic populations. The Sanskrit word "vanik," which means traders, is where the word "Bania" comes from. "Bania" is a general term used in Bengal to refer to moneylenders, local bankers, and grocery and spice vendors, regardless of caste. Agarwal Banias, Khandelwal Banias, Maheshwari Banias, Oswal Banias, and Porwal Banias are among the subcastes that make up the community. The majority of Banias follow Jainism or Hinduism, but some have also accepted Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhism.

The majority of Banias follow a vegetarian diet, however, others follow more stringent dietary guidelines. They take great care to ensure that insects are not harmed during food preparation or consumption. Banias are well-known for their dedication and thrift, spending little on furnishings, food, or clothes.

The Bania males receive their education in patshalas, where they study secret merchant scripts, reading, writing, and commercial skills. They emphasize precise mathematical computations and are skilled in arithmetic, accountancy, and cyphers. From an early age, they are prepared to run family enterprises by being imbued with the ethos of acquiring wealth and engaging in productive trades.

They use unreadable handwriting and secret scripts to keep business activities secret and value compromises over confrontations. Honour is highly valued and correlated with creditworthiness; dishonesty and bankruptcies result in social disgrace and exclusion.

Bania's life is heavily influenced by religion; she follows Vaishnav and Jain doctrines. Their religious rituals, prayers, and celebrations are essential, especially the wealth-bringing Lakshmi Puja. Rich Banias show off their wealth by throwing feasts, buying jewellery, and giving to charitable causes, all of which reflect their prestige and standing in the community.
