Dr. Gururaj Karajagi was born on 24th May 1952 in Bilagi, Bagalkot District. He spent his formative years in Dharwad and learnt the knowledge gained from ancient Indian scriptures in a traditional gurukula for six years. He subsequently completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Karnataka University, and was a consistent Rank holder, never out of the first three. He joined a Ph.D. course in Inorganic Chemistry and completed his doctorate in two years, and he also won an award for his subject study in the Indian Chemical Society.

Dr. Karajagi's journey as a teacher and educator took its first steps in 1973. He became the Principal of a reputed women's college in Bangalore at the age of 29 years and headed that College for 16 years.
