Born as Devendu Verma on October 30, 1937, in Kutch, Gujarat, Deven Verma grew up in a culturally rooted Rajasthani Hindu family. Although born in Gujarat, he spent much of his childhood in Pune, Maharashtra. His father, Baldev Singh Verma, was involved in the silver trade, while his mother, Sarala Devi, hailed from Kutch. He had four sisters—Nirupama, Tushar, Amita, and Parul—two of whom were twins.
Educationally enthusiastic, Deven completed his post-secondary studies at Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune, and earned an honors degree in Sociology/Politics between 1953 and 1957. He had briefly registered at Government Law College, Mumbai, before dropping out. During this time, he also began using the name Deven, which became synonymous with comic genius in the Indian film industry.
Initial Career & Stardom

Deven's acting career started with the movie Dharmputra when he got his first role; Unsurprisingly, it was unsuccessful commercially. Between acting in 'stage shows' abroad and returning to India, he was able show that he was gifted at being funny.
Deven's big break came in about 1975 with the film Chori Mera Kaam, where he received much praise and was recognised as an outstanding comic actor with perfect comic timing. For a period of 20 years thereafter, Deven became a household name through multiple Bollywood comedy films such as Gol Maal, Angoor & Chor Ke Ghar Banduk.
Deven also worked with some of the greatest directors of all time, including Basu Chatterji, Hrishikesh Mukherjee & Gulzar; thus making him part of the golden age of cinema, which was entertaining, for the most part, lighthearted, and made social commentary. All of Deven's performances had a high degree of subtlety, naturally delivered lines & perfect comic timing.
Beyond Acting: Direction and Production

Deven Verma was both an extremely talented actor and a very skilled producer and director. He was also a director of movies such as Besharam, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore, as well as Nadaan and Bada Kabootar. His multitasking abilities proved that he was very versatile and knowledgeable about the workings of film.
He also made television appearances, particularly during the early 1990s, to further connect with his audience beyond the cinema.
Family Life

Rupa Ganguly is Deven Verma's wife and the daughter of the legendary actor Ashok Kumar. Their relationship grew closer and eventually led to marriage after two years of dating. Even though Deven was known as a celebrity, he maintained a relatively private and humble personal life.
Awards & Legacy
Deven won three Filmfare Awards for Best Actor in a Comic Role due in large part to his extraordinary talent in comedy. He won these awards for the movies Chori Mera Kaam, Chor Ke Ghar Chor, and Angoor.
Deven Verma died on 2 December 2014 from heart complications and kidney failure at the age of 78. Deven's legacy lives on through his remarkable ability to make people laugh and by creating an enduring body of work that continues to entertain fans of Indian cinema. Deven Verma will always be remembered as one of the greatest comic actors in the history of Indian cinema who brought smiles to millions of movie lovers across many generations.
