Leigh Spann (born June 20, 1979) is an accomplished American meteorologist and longtime weather reporter for WFLA-TV (NBC-8) in Tampa–St. Petersburg. She celebrated her 40th birthday in June 2019, which makes her around 46 years old as of 2025.
Early Life & Education
Leigh grew up in Hazlehurst, Georgia, and graduated as valedictorian of her small high school class. She later attended the University of Georgia (UGA), earning a degree in Geography along with a certificate in Atmospheric Sciences. She graduated magna cum laude in 2001. During her senior year, she interned at WMAZ in Macon and began working there full-time shortly after.
Broadcast Career
Spann began her professional meteorology career at WMAZ in Macon in 2002. She later moved to WCBD in Charleston, South Carolina, before joining WFLA in September 2007 as a weekend meteorologist. Over time, she transitioned to the weekday morning position, often arriving at the studio by 2:00–2:30 a.m. to prepare weather updates and graphics for early broadcasts starting at 4:30 a.m.
Throughout her career at WFLA, she was part of the “Storm Team 8” and co-hosted the “Make Today Gr8” segment alongside Gayle Guyardo on WTTA’s Great 38. Due to her dedication, Leigh has received numerous awards, including an Emmy Award in 2012 for a special on hurricane preparedness. She also won an Award of Merit as the “Weathercaster of the Year” earlier in her career, for the State of South Carolina.
Spann retired from broadcasting in November 2024. After 17 years plus at WFLA, and just over 20 years of total broadcast experience. She relocated to northern Ohio to reunite with her husband and began a new role working behind the scenes as a talent agent representing meteorologists and broadcast journalists.
