Major Mohit Sharma was born on January 13, 1978, in Rohtak, Haryana, India. He was the son of Shri Rajendra Prasad Sharma and Smt Sushila Sharma. He was bright in schoolearnedot good grades, and participated in sporting events. He attended schools like Manav Sthali School and DPS Ghaziabaddemonstratinghe leadership traits at a young age. Although at first he took up engineering college he decided his interest was in the armed forces and joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1995.
Military Career
Having graduated from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Mohit Sharma joined the 5 Madras Regiment in December 1999. He has worked in the counter-insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir where he received early gallantry awards including the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and later the Sina Medal (SM) of gallantry after performing his duty in a secret mission. It was in June 2003 that he enlisted in the 1 Para (Special Forces) which is one of the most elite units of the Indian Army where he was still undertaking high-risk operations.
Martyrdom and Heroic Final Battle
Major Sharma, who was leading his troop (Bravo Assault Team) in the thick Hafruda Forest, at Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, on 21 March 2009 came across a large force of terrorists. He saved wounded comrades under intense fire and killed four militants himself although he was critically injured. He led the process until he died from his wounds showing immense courage and sacrifice to his nation.
Honours & Decorations
After his conspicuous gallantry, leadership, and ultimate sacrifice in the Kupwara operation, Major Mohit Sharma was given the Ashoka Chakra (AC) -the highest military award given in India after death to show his gallantry during peacetime. This was before he was awarded the Sina Medal (SM) and the COAS Commendation Card as a result of his valour and service in the previous operations.
Personal Life
His wife Major Rishima Sharma, who is also an officer in the Indian Army, and the family, including his older brother Madhur Sharma survive Major Sharma. He was an inspiring leader, dedicated to sacrificing his life, which is still a point of motivation in the armed forces and other places in India.
