Childhood and Schooling
Born in 1745, Shrimant Subhedar Male Rao Holkar II Bahadur belonged to the distinguished Holkar dynasty of the Marathas. His martial traditions were ingrained in him from an early age. He started going on military campaigns with his father, Khanderao Holkar, and grandfather, Malhar Rao Holkar when he was just 8 or 9 years old. His leadership and combat abilities were sharpened by this early experience.

Achievements in the Military
Male Rao Holkar was an exceptional fighter. He was recognized for his extraordinary sword-fighting prowess, and in 1761-62, his grandfather bestowed upon him the Jagir of Sultanpur as a tribute to his bravery and combat prowess.

Diplomatic Attempts
Male Rao Holkar was not only a skilled fighter but also a diplomatic diplomat. He was given the responsibility by the Peshwa to negotiate a settlement with Jawahar Singh Jat, which is a testament to his diplomatic skills and further establishes his reputation as a strong leader.

Individual Lives and Matrimonials
Male Rao Holkar had two notable marriages during his personal life. At the young age of eleven, he wed Mainabai Holkar (née Bahad) in 1756. Subsequently, in 1765, he married Pirtabai Holkar (née Wagh), the Maratha Army's renowned leader Sardar Santaji Wagh's daughter.

Sad Death
Male Rao Holkar had diplomatic and military success, but tragedy clouded his life. He suffered from mental sickness, and in 1767 he passed away. According to legend, a terrible occurrence in which he mistakenly executed an innocent person caused his mental degeneration. It is said that the weight of this error caused him to go into melancholy, which ultimately caused his premature death. It is reported that he experienced four months of insomnia during his illness, which made his condition worse till his death in 1767.

History

Despite his short reign as the Maharaja of Indore, Maratha's history is shaped by Male Rao Holkar II Bahadur's military and diplomatic prowess. Even though he met a horrible end, his legacy lives on as a reminder of the difficulties in leading and the toll that mental suffering can have, even on the most courageous of leaders.
