Born on September 27, 1965, in Mumbai, India, Sudha Chandran hails from a family originally from Vayalur, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Her father, K.D. Chandran, was an actor. She completed her B.A. from Mithibai College in Mumbai and later obtained an M.A. in economics.

A tragic accident in 1980 led to the amputation of her leg. However, with a prosthetic limb, she made a remarkable comeback as a Bharatanatyam dancer. Shortly after resuming her career, she starred in "Mayuri," where she met her future husband, assistant director Ravi Dang, leading to a love-at-first-sight romance.

In 1994, Sudha Chandran eloped with Ravi Dang due to opposition from her parents, who disapproved of the inter-community marriage between a Punjabi and a Tamilian.
