Sunidhi Chauhan was born on August 14, 1983, in New Delhi in a musically inclined family. Her father, Dushyant Kumar Chauhan, was an established theatre artist, while her mother chose to be a homemaker. She was encouraged by her family to sing from a very young age. She dropped out of school after attending Green Way Modern School in New Delhi to fully pursue music. Her original name was Nidhi Chauhan, later changed to Sunidhi by musician Kalyanji.

Sunidhi's career began at just 13 when she performed in the reality show Meri Aawaz Suno, winning the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy. The attention of Aadesh Shrivastava had been attracted by the maiden girl after which she had recorded her first song for the Shastra (1996) film.
