Global streaming platforms have deep pockets & are not averse to burning money to acquire new users. Indian studios are making hay while the sun shines. As per a source, an Indian studio has been bribing high level execs working for global streaming platforms. They end up buying the streaming rights for astronomical sums. The studio is assured to make its money back irrespective of the box office run or even the audience acceptance of the movie or web series the studio sells to the streaming platform. The studio in question has had a horrible year, with all their movies flopping. But while they box office standing has taken a hit, their financials are not in dire straits. The industrialist who invested in the studio might be disappointed with the profit margins, but his investment is safe. The studio in question is not the only one which is making millions off streaming platforms. Almost all top studios have these lucrative deals with the streaming platforms.
Satellite rights were hot property in the late 90's. The producers who held on to the rights of their movies made millions. While some bankrupt producers who had to sell rights to their movies to stay afloat ended up being the losers. Since the last several years, global & Indian streaming platforms have been paying huge sums for streaming rights. This is a win-win deal for the filmmakers & streaming platforms concerned. But it is a matter of time before someone at these studios takes a closer look at their finances & decides to cut costs. It is a bubble waiting to burst.
