7 Confusing Songs Which Became Popular.
It's happened to the best of us. We hear a new song on the radio, fall in love, and begin to sing the lyrics we think we're hearing — though they end up being entirely incorrect.
Nevertheless, these misheard lyrics can lead to humorous reinterpretations and even funny videos.
Here are some of the funniest misheard lyrics of all time, plus what the musicians were actually singing.
1."We Built This City" by Starship.
Misheard: “We built this city on sausage rolls”
Correct: “We built this city on rock and roll”
This misheard lyric from Starship’s first-ever single is so common that it prompted a parody song. YouTuber LadBaby (aka Mark Hoyle) held the #1 position on the U.K. singles charts during the 2018 holiday season for his cover about pork-stuffed pastries. Beating out artists like Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey for the honor, all proceeds from his track were donated to the Trussell Trust, a food bank charity.
2." I Want To Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles
Misheard: “I get high, I get high”
Correct: “I can’t hide, I can’t hide”
It’s nice to know that even other singers mishear hit songs. Bob Dylan first met the Beatles and told them that he really liked their song I Want to Hold Your Hand. Then he said one of his favorite lines in it was “I get high, I get high”. John Lennon had to inform him that the line was actually “I can’t hide, I can’t hide”. It is sort of ironic that Bob Dylan has trouble deciphering lyrics when everyone that listens to Bob Dylan sing has the same problem.
3. "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John.
Misheard-"Hold me closer tiny dancer,"
Correct- "Hold me close, young Tony Danza."
For years, there's been a running joke that Elton John wrote his 1971 song "Tiny Dancer" about Tony Danza, an American actor known for his work in "Who's the Boss?" and "Taxi."
This gag is said to have started after a character sang the mispronounced lyric on an episode of "Friends" and said the song was written about Danza.
The misquoted lyric comes from the line "Hold me closer tiny dancer," which some people may hear as "Hold me close, young Tony Danza."
4. "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift
Misheard: “All the lonely Starbucks lovers”
Correct: “Got a long list of ex-lovers”
This lyric was misheard so frequently by Taylor Swift fans, that the singer actually poked fun at her own song on Valentine’s Day in 2015. In a now-deleted tweet, she wrote: “Sending my love to all the lonely Starbucks lovers out there this Valentine’s Day… even though that is not the correct lyric.” To which the coffee chain playfully replied: “Wait, it’s not?”
5."Waterfall" by TLC
Misheard: “Don’t go Jason Waterfalls”
Correct: “Don’t go chasing waterfalls”
In 1995, TLC won the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year for this signature track, which spent seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, that didn’t keep fans from actually knowing all the lyrics to the now-classic track. The “Jason Waterfalls” lyric even has its own Urban Dictionary page, setting fans straight on their mistakes once and for all.
6. "Good For You" by Selena Gomez.
Misheard: “ I’m farting carrot"
Correct: “I’m 14 carat”
Selena Gomez's "Good for You" was a 2015 hit, but some fans misheard the song's opening line "I'm 14 carats," which refers to diamonds, as "I'm farting carrots." In an interview with BBC Radio 1's Scott Mills, the singer laughed at the incorrect, vegetable-focused lyric and said the radio hosts may be mishearing it because of their English accents. She also confirmed that the lyric was "I'm 14 carats."
7. "NSYNC" by Justin Timberlake.
Misheard: “Its gonna be May"
Correct: “It’a gonna be me"
The now infamous meme, Justin Timberlake's titular line in the NSYNC song "It's Gonna Be Me" is not "It's gonna be May," despite what our ears seem to be telling us.
This misheard lyric has become a popular meme that comes around annually just before the first day of May. Over the years, even members of the band have gotten in on the fun by posting Instagrams of the misheard line.
