Is Bollywood Stagnating In Terms of Revenue?

Indian film industry ranks 5th among the top 10 profit generating film industries all over the world, dropping all the way from 2nd in that list. Bollywood lost 70% of its revenue in the year 2019, although the revenue scale recovered from that huge drop they aren’t showing steady growth.

Let’s better understand it by looking at the revenue collected by Dangal till 2017. Dangal became the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide in 2017 by collecting a sum of Rs.2000 crores. All the films produced onwards and till date have not even come close. This proves to show the revenue problem the Bollywood industry is suffering from.

We can analyze and conclude some reasons for this problem, starting from the drastic change in starring actors and actresses. Bollywood was in its prime when the films were starring gems who were highly experienced in their respective genres. New actors and actresses are replacing those gems and let’s face it they are not particularly good, indeed there are some super talented amongst them but most of them need polishing and experience. Another point to note is that the content of the films is degrading day by day, we might see some good quality films once a year or two but that is all there is. Most of the films highly focus on unnecessary action and romance, trying to attract an audience but that is eating away all the quality of Bollywood. Part of the reason for the drastic revenue drop was the pandemic as well, the theaters and movie halls were shut down for quite a while making it harder for the industry to generate profit. Pirating movies became an excessive thing and it acted as a hammer on the already crushed profits.

A steady recovery is to be expected, let us hope Bollywood rectifies these small flaws in the near future. An attempt can be seen through the announcement of Laal Singh Chaddha which is a remake of the Oscar-winning Hollywood film ‘Forrest Gump’ starring Aamir Khan. This is an effort in a positive direction, we can only hope Bollywood keeps this pace and takes back its reputation and standards.
