Ant-Man & The Wasp Review
Ant-Man’s size regulator malfunctioning leads to several difficult circumstances
Hank Pym/Ant-Man(Michael Douglas) tells his daughter, Hope(Evangeline Lilly) that her mother is dead. But years later a fugivite – Scott Lang(Paul Rudd) becomes Ant-Man & discovers a way to return from the quantum realm. This gives the father-daughter duo some hope that Janet may still be alive & can be brought back. Lang & Hope start training as Ant-Man & The Wasp. But Scott is called on by Captain America to fight against The Avengers. This is a violation as per the Sokovia Accord. He is placed under house arrest for two years. But at the start of the movie we are told that two years have almost passed & his house arrest is about to end in 3 days. Any violation of the house arrest & Scott will have to spend 20 years behind bars.

Meanwhile Hope & Pym are briefly able to open a tunnel to the quantum realm. Hope kidnaps Scott & places a decoy in his place. The decoy is a giant Ant, who is programmed to replicate Scott’s behavior. Scott has to help Hope buy one final part needed to build a tunnel to retrieve Janet from a black market dealer Sonny Burch(Walton Goggins), but the deal goes kaput as Sonny has plans of his own. As Hope is about the run away with the part needed for the tunnel, Ghost(Hannah John-Kamen)robs her of the part & escapes with the portable lab.

Will Scott get caught for violating the terms of his house arrest? Will the trio be able to retrieve Janet? Or do The Ghost & Sonny Burch manage to spoil their plans? And what about several Marvel characters, dying at the end the last Avengers movie? These questions form the story arc for the movie.

Strengths

While we weren’t blown over by the movie. It does make for a some fun viewing. Paul Rudd as the Ant-Man is good & is complemented well by Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp. Michael Douglas is a gifted actor, but doesn’t get to prove his acting prowess. But then again Marvel movies are not known for high quality acting. They are known for the superhero action & story line. The movie does deliver on these two fronts. The background score is good. Randall park as Jimmy Woo is endearing. His character seems like the FBI version of his character in the hit TV show – Fresh Off The Boat.

Weaknesses

Like most of the Marvel movies, this one too does get boring in between. The cript could have been tighter. The movie lacks a menacing villain, which is a mainstay of all the best movies from the Marvel Universe. While The Ghost & Sonny do give the lead characters a tough time, they are not in the league of Thanos or Killmonger or The Mandarin who give the superheroes nightmares.

Verdict: While this movie is not in the league of Black Panther or Iron Man, we would still suggest you do give it a watch, but not expect too much. It does make for a breezy entertainer.
