Bollywood Celebs And Their Underworld Connections

Beneath the glitz, the fabric of the underworld-Bollywood nexus has not changed much even in 2021. This world of glamour is pretty shady and that’s no secret to all. Bollywood and the underworld have a deep-rooted connection and there have been many instances when our celebrities and gangsters have crossed paths.  Until the 1990’s the relationship remained symbiotic until things turned hostile followed by death threats.

 For all those who didn’t know there have been times when some of the biggest underworld dons have fallen for Bollywood’s leading ladies and ultimately married or cohabited with them. For some the connections even helped them bag great roles and films.

1. Sanjay Dutt  

Dutt’s life has always been a roller coaster. The actor received a lot of flak for his name being involved for illegally possessing arms during the 1993 bomb blasts. He was even tagged as a terrorist after the tapes of his alleged conversation with Chhota Shakeel were released by the Mumbai police. He was jailed for his name being involved in the blasts and his personal life went for a toss. It was in 2016 that he walked out as a free man from the Yerawada Central Prison in Pune.

2. Shah Rukh Khan

 The King of Bollywood has had a run-in with the mafia of underworld. SRK has openly admitted to speaking to dreaded gangster Chhota Shakeel under duress, claiming he had to listen to a story and decide whether to make a film about it. In an interview, SRK had once revealed how he was pressured to act in a movie. He has also admitted to receiving death threats after his movie Happy New Year released. Also the relation between Dawood Ibrahim and Shah Rukh cant be neglected.

3. Monica Bedi

 She was rumoured to be married to the underworld goon, Abu Salem. Monica revealed that her first interaction with Abu Salem was in 1998, when he asked her to perform at a show in Dubai.  "I began getting friendly with him over the phone. At that time, he gave me a different name. I didn't know he was Abu Salem. Actually, even if he had told me he was Abu Salem, I would've had no clue. I had only heard about Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. I'd never heard of Abu Salem," she said. It’s even said that Abu used his influence to get roles for Monica in movies like Jaanam Samjha Karo and Jodi No 1. 

4. Preity Zinta

Preity found herself in troubled waters when Ness Wadia claimed that she had a meeting with Ravi Pujari, an underworld Don. It was around the release of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, she was rumoured to be seen with the goon but she later denied all the claims. She even received threat calls from the underworld, while she was shooting for Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.

5.  Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor has been targeted for his close proximity with Dawood Ibrahim. The actor was spotted with the underworld don in cricket matches but Anil denied any involvement with Dawood. One of the trolls also asked Sonam Kapoor about the pictures of Anil and Dawood being spotted together. 

6. Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar

They found herself in the spotlight when the reports of her attending parties hosted by the underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim along with Akshay Kumar started making rounds. Akshay, however, rubbished the rumours. Akshay reportedly got a threatening call from the underworld who have warned him of dire consequences.

7. Gulshan Kumar

       The cold-blooded killing of 'Cassette King' Gulshan Kumar revealed that the Mumbai underworld's nexus with Bollywood is nasty. Brazen, rapid-fire, and in a sudden blaze. Death came to Gulshan Kumar much as success did. It is thought that the hit was called by Dawood, with Abu Salem also playing a role.

The underworld and Bollywood have had a bitter-sweet relationship for a long time. Others directors and stars like Mukesh Bhatt, Boney Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan have all admitted to receiving calls for sharing of profits, with dire consequences threatened if they didn't comply. Dawood Ibrahim & his second in command - Chota Shakeel, are rumored to have a looming presence in the industry to date.
