Gehraiyaan Ending Explained

When traditional Bollywood reveals a movie that focuses on artistic and intense themes, we tend to be wary because of the industry's tendency to make these projects overly commercialized and full of hackneyed lines that are more absurd than meaningful. Fortunately, "Gehraiyaan" does not take this approach. However, something else stops the movie from being successful.

When the trailer for “Gehraiyaan” was released, everyone was thrilled that Bollywood was making a romantic movie after a long time and the trailer itself was unique. We were particularly drawn to the trailer because it didn't contain the awkwardness that often comes with Bollywood romantic films and there were no metaphors used to sound profound. We were anticipating the movie but after watching it, we were disappointed for different reasons despite the fact that it wasn't embarrassing and the dialogue was more realistic.

It was extremely shocking to us to discover that Zain, whom Alisha had come to rely on, became the person who wanted to take away her life as she was now a hindrance in his life. Alisha came to the realization that Zain had been deceiving her again when she read his messages and saw him slipping pills into her beverage. In the subsequent argument, Zain was hit on the head and plunged from the yacht, leading to his death. Then Alisha returned to the mainland alone.

One of the main things that "Gehraiyaan" gets right is how trauma can be passed down from generation to generation, as well as how we tend to repeat the same mistakes we are trying to avoid without proper guidance. Alisha started an affair to get out of her dead-end relationship, not wanting to end up like her mother. But when the truth came out, she realised she had made the same mistake. She had a vulnerable conversation with her father and chose to accept her past and move forward with it, instead of trying to run away from it. This is a reminder of something we have heard before: you can't simply discard your baggage, you just have to learn how to carry it in such a way that it doesn't feel so heavy over time.

Another element of the finale is whether Zain was aware of Alisha and Tia's truth and if his conduct was determined by that information. We can only assume that even if he knew, he didn't act on it, since the entire property was evidently in Tia's name. The last 30 seconds of the film, however, are the real shocker. As Alisha chooses to let go of her past, an overlooked reminder of it suddenly appears before her. The old lady who challenged Alisha in the end was somebody that Alisha and Zain had helped when they were still a couple, on one of their trips aboard the yacht.

At the engagement party, Alisha and the old woman are reunited and the old woman recognizes Alisha and addresses her by name. The movie ends without revealing whether Alisha is able to prevent the old woman from telling Tia the truth about her and Zain's past or if the past will catch up with her. The movie leaves it to the viewer's imagination, which gives it an extra layer of impact.
