A near-pandemic project worth ₹22 crore launched where a multimedia show and laser show were showcased at Ambazari Garden in Nagpur recently has become controversial because this park has remained closed for public access for almost more than five years.
Residents are now wondering the point of this project since all assurances were with respect to transforming the garden into a recreational place for the public when they still do not have access to the main garden.
According to local journalist Anjaya Anparthi, the controversy began in 2017 when the State Government transferred the management of Ambazari Garden from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). In November 2019, MTDC handed over the garden's control to a private company, Garuda Amusement Nagpur Pvt. Ltd.
Instead of revamping the space, Garuda Amusement unexpectedly closed the garden, barring public entry. At the same time, the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) initiated a ₹22 crore multimedia and laser show project on a 2.25-acre plot near Ambazari Lake. Today, the development has so much confusion as it has left the way to the main garden still blocked.
When Garuda Amusement demolished the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Cultural Centre, it became the cause of much controversy, especially among the devotees. Though later on, ₹10 crore was allocated by the government for the reconstruction of the memorial, the act left much anger and distrust behind.
Doubts or concerns related to the garden's management have grown among the citizens. They are questioning the reason why Garuda Amusement continues to manage the garden. Another thing, the residents are demanding answers on when the residents will be able to have access to the much-acclaimed garden and why it is still under private management. Among the frustrations were elderly people, children, and families complaining of too slow progress and lack of transparency in the restoration going on in the garden.
As work on the ₹22 crore laser show progresses, many worry that the project will lose its significance unless Ambazari Garden is reopened to the public. Nagpur’s residents are now eagerly awaiting action to restore the garden to its original purpose—a place for recreation, culture, and community enjoyment.
