There was a time when many considered Sanath Jayasuriya to be one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He is a former cricketer who played for and captained Sri Lanka. An orthodox left-arm spinner and top-order batsman, he represented the Sri Lankan cricket team from 1989 to 2011, retiring in 2011. He was named ICC Cricketer of the Year in 1996 and later helped Sri Lanka win their first World Cup.
He currently serves as a Member of the Sri Lankan Parliament and is responsible for player selection for Sri Lanka Cricket. Jayasuriya is considered a legend in Sri Lankan cricket due to his unbeaten attacking style. He devoted a huge amount of time and energy to the above sport, which made him famous in Sri Lanka and abroad.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently suspended bombshell Sanath Jayasuriya for several years for corruption in cricket. His personal life has also been a topic of controversy, especially in relation to his attempted marriages. Matara-born Jayasuriya married Air Lanka floor standee Sumudu Karunanayake in 1998 but the couple separated the following year.
Jayasuriya was married to former Sri Lankan Airlines flight attendant Sandra de Silva. Savindi Jayasuriya, Yarindi Jayasuriya and Ranuka Jayasuriya are also her three children. However, the marriage also failed to stand the test of time and they divorced in early 2012. After his divorce, Sanath reconnected with fellow air hostess and film actress Maleeka Sirisena. They married at the Buddhist temple of Mount Lavinia.
Sanath Jayasuriya appointed as interim coach of Sri Lanka:
Former Sri Lanka captain and one-day specialist Sanath Jayasuriya will be the interim coach when Sri Lanka plays a one-day series at home against India and a three-Test series away in England that ends in mid-September.
Although he has never coached a major team before, he was until recently head coach of the Sri Lanka men's team and cricket consultant to Sri Lanka Cricket.
The move comes after Chris Silverwood resigned in late June after the 2024 T20 World Cup. SLC CEO Ashley de Silva had previously said the position would also be advertised while the board looked for a suitable candidate, adding that Sri Lanka might prefer to field a local coach for the post.
